Black Bears Fall In Shootout

The Maryland Black Bears held a 2-0 lead after forty minutes of play and looked to snag its fifth win of the season. But the Jamestown Rebels rallied in the third period and capped the comeback off in the shootout, stealing one in Maryland 3-2.

The action started in the second period, where Black Bears’ forward Jake Sujishi got the puck off a board battle and threw it short side over the glove of Rebels goalie Ryan Keane to make it 1-0. Maryland then added to the lead right after a penalty kill. Connor Pooley led a two on one for the Black Bears with Max Borst, who had just exited the penalty box. Pooley’s initial shot went off the pad of Keane, but Borst crashed the net and tapped home the rebound to put Maryland up by two.

Jamestown responded in the opening minutes of the third, where a Nate Clark shot was tipped buy Auggie Moore to make it 2-1. The Black Bears held this lead until the final minutes of the game, where Jamestown forward Alex Frye recorded his second point of the game with a game tying goal. Frye went wide to the boards past a Maryland defender, got space, and shot the puck just before the goal-line over the right shoulder of Black Bears’ goalie David Tomeo short side to tie the game.

In overtime, the Black Bears had a clutch penalty kill after Luke Posner took a penalty early in the extra frame. David Tomeo led the way with multiple saves throughout the penatly kill. The game ended 2-2 after overtime, sending Maryland to its first shootout in franchise history.

In the end, it was the Rebels capping off the comeback in the shootout. After Quinn Warmuth gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead after round one, Ryan Keane was perfect for Jamestown the rest of the way. Two goals from Nick Stuckless and Jim Glynn gave the Rebels the edge heading into the second half of round three, where Keane made one last stop on Matteo Menotti for secure the win. Jamestown improves to 5-6-0 while Maryland goes to 4-5-4. Despite the loss, Maryland picks up a point and takes sole possession of third place in the East Division.

The Black Bears and Rebels rematch Saturday, October 20th at Piney Orchard Ice Arena with puck drop at 7:45 P.M. ET.
