The Maryland Black Bears had dropped five of the past six meetings with the New Jersey Titans and looked to change the narrative. The Titans had other plans, and handed Maryland its third straight loss by the score of 4-2.
The game started with a spirited fight between New Jersey Captain Spencer Stanley and Maryland forward Carter Wade, who was playing his first game since November 10th. Maryland struck first with a goal from Captain Quinn Warmuth on the power play. Warmuth walked in from the point and put a wrist shot low glove side by Titans goalie Brandon Perrone.
New Jersey responded with a power play goal of its own thanks to forward Gavin Gulash. Gulash received a pass from teammate Michael Outzen to the left of Maryland goalie David Tomeo and put a slap shot in the net to tie it at 1-1.
Black Bears’ forward Patrick Choi responded to end the scoring in the first period. Jonathan Young forced a turn over behind the net, then fed Choi in the high slot for a wrist shot goal to make it 2-1 Maryland.
Former Black Bear forward and current Titan Matteo Menotti tied things up in the second period. Menotti got a break away pass on the power play, and made a move on Tomeo to make it 2-2.
Scoring stayed silent until the third period, where Titans’ forward Kyle Jeffers scored a wrist shot goal in the slot on the power play to give New Jersey a 3-2 lead. Mitch Machlitt iced it for the Titans with an empty net goal to bring the final score to 4-2.
Maryland and New Jersey conclude the two game series Saturday, February 2nd at Piney Orchard Ice Arena. Puck drop is at 7:45 P.M. ET as these two East Division battle for crucial points as the season nears conclusion.
