The Maryland Black Bears haven’t played a lot at its usual home, Piney Orchard Ice Arena, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Heading into its game against the Danbury Jr Hat Tricks, Maryland was 0-4 in the limited games at Piney Orchard they’ve had. But behind a two-goal performance from forward Garret Szydlowski, the Black Bears got its first win at Piney Orchard Ice Arena and snapped a 12 game losing streak winning by the score of 5-1.
Garret Szydlowski got the scoring started for Maryland in the first by intercepting a Danbury clear attempt and shot it low blocker side to make it 1-0. The Black Bears were able to double its lead late in the first period when forward Brad McNeil jammed home a loss puck to make it 2-0. Josh Nixon added to Maryland’s lead in the second period by tipping a shot from teammate Daniel Colabufo to make it 3-0. This was Colabufo’s first game since February 2nd. Alex Krause got Danbury on the board by burying a rebound to make it 3-1. But Garret Szydlowski responded late in the second period on a penalty shot, scoring off the post and in to make it 4-1. Connor Cole completed the scoring for Maryland when his pass was tipped into the net by a member of the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks to make it 5-1.
The Black Bears rematch the Jr. Hat Tricks Saturday night at Piney Orchard Ice Arena with puck drop at 6:30 PM ET.
