Black Bears Season Generals On Old Bay Night With 5-3 Win

It was a night honoring one of Maryland’s most treasured possessions, Old Bay seasoning. Dawning Old Bay themed jerseys, the Maryland Black Bears looked to bounce back against the Northeast Generals as the Generals beat the Black Bears the night before by the score of 6-3. And riding a three-goal second period Maryland did just that, beating the Northeast Generals 5-3.

Black Bears’ defenseman Sean Kilcullen got the scoring started, letting a wrist shot go on the powerplay to make it 1-0. The Generals responded 28 seconds later with forward Paul Minnehan tipping home a rebound to tie the game 1-1. Maryland regained the lead when forward Brad McNeil buried a rebound past Northeast goaltender Toby Hopp to make it 2-1. However, Paul Minnehan responded again for the Generals, sending a snap shot past the screened Black Bears goalie William Hakansson to tie the game 2-2.

Maryland regained the lead when forward Riley Ruh snapped a shot in the slot past the glove of Hopp to make it 3-2. Later in the second period, Black Bears’ forward Kal Essenmacher redirected a point shot to the top right corner to make it 4-2. Northeast was able to get a goal back before the end of the second period when forward Jarred Scott scored on a breakaway wrist shot to make it 4-3 after two periods. In the third, the lone goal of the period came from Maryland defenseman Kaleb Tiessen who scored from his own end into an empty net for a 5-3 final score. Hakansson made 25 saves in the winning effort.

The Black Bears are off next weekend but return home on Friday, February 10th, and Saturday, February 11th, as Maryland hosts the Maine Nordiques. All games can be streamed on HockeyTV.
