It was a low scoring affair at Ice World as the Maryland Black Bears looked for its third straight win against East Division rival Johnstown Tomahawks. They were able to do just that, using Hunter McCoy’s third period goal to lift Maryland to a 2-1 win. It was the Black Bears’ fourth time in franchise history defeating Johnstown.

After a scoreless first period, things heated up in the second period as Maryland forward Aden Bruich found himself in the box for five minutes for roughing. During the power play, Johnstown forward Jay Ahearn cashed in to make it 1-0 after he buried a puck that took a wild bounce off the boards behind the net. Reid Leibold responded for the Black Bears later in the frame, picking the top right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

Midway through the third period, Maryland broke the tie with a goal from Hunter McCoy. McCoy took a pass from behind the net from defenseman Cam Gaudette and roofed it to make it 2-1, a lead Maryland would hold on to. Michael Morelli made 25 saves in the win for Maryland, while Sam Evola made 20 saves for Johnstown.

Johnstown and Maryland will play once again on Saturday afternoon 2:30 P.M. ET. The game will be played at Ice World and can be viewed on HockeyTV.
