The Maryland Black Bears held the Jamestown Rebels off the scoreboard for the first 99 minutes of the weekend set between the two teams. However, it was not enough to secure two wins, as Jamestown used a strong third period to force overtime where forward Jak Vaarwerk won it for the Rebels by the score of 4-3.

The scoring didn’t start until the second period when Maryland forward Jacob Brockman scored on a one-time shot on a pass from defenseman Aidan McDowell for a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Black Bears’ defenseman Jack Blanchett put home a slap pass from forward Branden Piku for a 2-0 Maryland lead. The Black Bears were looking to take the 2-0 lead into the third period, but the Rebels had other plans. With one minute left in the second period, a point shot from Jamestown defenseman James Miller was redirected off a Black Bears’ defenseman and into the net to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the third period.

Jamestown picked up where they left off in the third period, striking twice in the first five and a half minutes to gain a 3-2 lead. Rebels’ forward Jak Vaarwerk put home a give and go with forward John Lundy to tie the game 2-2. Moments later, Vaarwerk darted into the offensive zone and fed the puck to Jamestown forward Kolby Amici to give the Rebels 3-2 lead. Later in the period, it was Maryland forward Elliott Lareau driving the net and producing a rebound that was put home by forward Jesse Horacek to tie the game for the Black Bears 3-3. The score was held through regulation and the game went to overtime. There, it was Jak Vaarwerk winning the game for Jamestown on a wrap-around goal for a 4-3 Rebels win.

The Black Bears hit the road on February 10th and 11th to take on the Northeast Generals. Maryland will return home on February 18th for a home series against the New Jersey Titans. All games can be streamed on HockeyTV.
