Maryland earned a big 4-2 comeback win Friday night against the New Jersey Titans, overcoming a two goal deficit to win the game. On Saturday, the two teams took the ice again, this time on Maryland’s Old Bay Night with the Black Bears wearing unique Old Bay-themed jerseys for the occasion. And much like Friday, Maryland found themselves down 2-0. And much like Friday night, Maryland completed the comeback, once again off two third period goals from Luke Janus, to earn a 6-3 win and a weekend sweep of the Titans.

New Jersey got the scoring started with an identical start to last night, with forward Kristofers Krumins getting the scoring started. Krumins jammed home a rebound in the crease through the five-hole of Black Bears’ goalie Owen Lepak to make it 1-0. In the second period, it was once again a powerplay goal from forward Dominik Bartecko on a one-time slapshot to make it 2-0. But Maryland, just like last night, mounted a comeback. It started 43 seconds after the Bartecko goal and saw three goals scored in three minutes and 47 seconds. It started with forward David Utkin scoring his first goal as a Black Bear as he walked the puck into the slot and fired a wrist shot past New Jersey goaltender Zakari Brice to cut the deficit to 2-1. Less than two minutes later, Maryland forward Jérémi Tremblay jammed home a rebound that was sitting in the crease to tie the game 2-2. Utkin then scored his second goal of the game less than two minutes after that, batting the puck out of midair to make it 3-2 Black Bears. New Jersey was able to tie the game on a two-on-none rush, with forward Jack Hillier finishing off the rush to tie the game 3-3.

In the third period, much like last night, it was Maryland forward Luke Janus putting the Black Bears ahead with two third period goals. The first of which Janus intended to pass the puck through the crease to the near side of the ice from the far circle, but it went off of a skate of a Titans’ player, past Brice, and in for a 4-3 lead. Janus scored his second goal on a snapshot from the slot on the powerplay to make it 5-3. Maryland forward Riley Ruh finished off the scoring with a wrist shot from the high slot to make it 6-3, a score that will hold up as final. Lepak made 22 saves in the winning effort.

The Black Bears will be home once again next weekend as they get set to face the Northeast Generals in a two game set starting Friday, February 2nd at Piney Orchard Ice Arena. All games can be streamed on NAHLTV.
