Matthew Shanklin has announced his commitment to play Division-3 hockey at Middlebury College. The Assistant Captain is playing his first season in Maryland but he has instantly become a fan favorite and a team leader. The Chagrin Falls, Ohio native has had a strong defensive presence this season, boasting a +2 rating this season through 19 games. Shanklin came to the Black Bears from the CCHL, where he played for the Nepean Raiders and the Brockville Braves. Before his time in juniors, he attended the Northwood School with fellow Black Bears Josh Waters, Reid Leibold, and Daniel Colabufo. Shanklin was also the Captain of the Northwood hockey team. Matthew had this to say on his commitment to Middlebury:

“My time in Maryland has been unbelievable. It is a first class organization that strives to help their players succeed. I can’t thank coach Mylymok and coach Gotkin enough for all they’ve done. We have a close knit team and I’m happy to apart of it. I’m looking forward to a great rest of the year as we look to continue building as a team.”

Coach Mylymok had this to say on Shanklin:

“Shanks had a goal of committing to a NESCAC school, and we found a great fit for his academic and athletic aspirations. He has worked hard to put himself in a situation to get a superior education, while continuing to play NCAA hockey. We are very proud and excited for Matthew and his future.”

Shanklin and the rest of the Black Bears will play again this Friday, February 12th. The Black Bears will be taking on the Johnstown Tomahawks in a two-game road series. Friday night’s matchup will be at 7:30pm, and Saturday’s will be at 7pm. Tune in on HockeyTV!
