The Maryland Black Bears concluded its road trip to start 2021 with another game against the Maine Nordiques. In four previous tries, the Nordiques have failed to win at home against its East Division rival. However, that streak ended just 17 seconds into overtime as Maine defeats Maryland 3-2.

The Nordiques struck first with a goal from forward Jackson Vercellono to make it 1-0. Less than five minutes later Maryland was able to respond with a beautiful goal from forward Josh Nixon, who passed the puck off the boards to himself and got around the defenseman for a wrist shot goal. The score remained 1-1 through two periods of play.

In the third period it was the Black Bears who scored to break the tie. Hunter McCoy recorded his third goal of the series on a backhand shot to make the score 2-1 Maryland. Maine was able to respond with under five minutes to go, as Ty Mathews found teammate Tristan Fasig from behind the net for the game tying tally. The game headed to overtime where Nordiques’ forward Stefan Owens scored a breakaway goal just 17 seconds into the extra frame to secure a Maine win. The Black Bears now drop to 4-0-1 all time in Maine.
