It was Teddy Bear Toss Night at Piney Orchard Ice Arena with the Maryland Black Bears and Philadelphia Rebels meeting for the second consecutive weekend. The two teams split a pair of games in Philadelphia last weekend, with the Rebels winning game one 5-4 and the Black Bears winning game two 3-1. Although Maryland was able to strike first and send the teddy bears flying, it was a third period comeback by the Rebels spoiling the fun as Philadelphia took the game with a 2-1 shootout win.

Scoring was silent until the end of the second period when the Black Bears could strike on the power play with a goal from defenseman Sebastian Brockman. Maryland worked the puck around and eventually got the puck on goal and though the initial shot was blocked, forward Tyler Stern got the puck and slid it across to Brockman who chipped it over Rebels’ goalie Jack Fialkoff for a 1-0. Philadelphia responded with a shorthanded goal early in the third period with forward Charles Panchisin getting a breakaway and beating Black Bears’ goalie Colin Ronan high glove side for a 1-1 tie.

The game remained tied through regulation and overtime, despite an overtime power play chance for the Rebels, which led the game to a shootout. There, it was once again Philadelphia’s Charles Panchisin scoring high glove side on Ronan for the shootout’s only goal. Fialkoff made three saves in the shootout to help the Rebels secure a 2-1 win. Jack Fialkoff made 33 saves for Philadelphia and Ronan made 27 saves on the night.

Maryland and Philadelphia rematch on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET at Piney Orchard Ice Arena for the final home game in 2023. All games can be streamed on NAHLTV.
